Q1.

1) There are many combinations of PoW and PoS, is there any difference between Mintlayer's combination model and other models?

2) The choices of stakers are made randomly. Doesn't this process lead to duplicate choices?

3) 10% of MLT tokens will be used for marketing and listing, so which marketing method will you use MLT for?

4) UI/UX design is a very important factor for users to directly gain favor with the project, so what was the focus of the design in Mintlayer?

5) As the Korean blockchain market is very active now, many Korean investors are paying attention to the emergence of new blockchain projects every day, so is there any plan for Mintlayer to enter Korea?

A1.

1) Mintlayer will use a brand new consensus mechanism called "Dynamic Slot Allotment", or "DSA", created by the founders. Indeed, it incorporates both PoW (by relying on the BTC blockchain as a source of entropy), as well as PoS, and it combines what we see as the best elements from a few other different approaches. This allows Mintlayer to enjoy the security of PoW without  having to compete against BTC for computational resources, and also avoiding the security risks of pure PoS (such as "long range attacks", which are impossible with DSA). Compared to different approaches for combining PoW with PoS, DSA also makes no sacrifices or compromises with regards to decentralisation and trustlesness. We will be releasing some easy to read articles going more in detail on DSA soon, but until then you can read our technical consensus paper about DSA here: https://www.mintlayer.org/docs/DSA-consensus-paper-draft.pdf

2) A single staker can be selected for more than a slot in a round. Statistically, the more the token at stake, the more the slots you will gain. Two different nodes will agree about who is the staker winning a particular Mintlayer slot, to the extent that they agree about which is the real Bitcoin blockchain and its last block, which is used as a source of entropy for the randomization process

3) A variety of marketing campaigns will take place, with a focus on real, organic adoption of the technology, both by end-users, and (especially in the first couple of years) developers and ecosystem builders. As a new protocol, our first key target audiences will indeed be developers in the blockchain space, as well as financial institutions, who we will incentivise to build on top of Mintlayer in a several ways, including, perhaps most importantly, intensive support, documentation and developer tools to facilitate the creation or porting of DeFi applications. We shall organise Hackathons, offer grants and investments to third party Mintlayer projects, and also extensively reach out to the academic world, helping students at universities with Blockchain programs understand the importance of Decentralised Finance and exposing them to Mintlayer. On the end-user, or "retail" side, an even wider variety of marketing methods (too long to list here) will be employed, with two key target audiences identified which will have different narratives offered to each; first, Bitcoin purists who are not yet familiar with DeFi or do not trust or use DeFi apps regularly yet, and secondly,  regular DeFi users who might not fully understand the privacy and centralisation issues of current DeFi protocols, and in any case are tired of high transaction fees and are looking for alternative protocols.

4) There are in particular two innovative features of the wallet that are crucial in Mintlayer roadmap with a special focus for UX/UI.

One is the possibility of batching transactions together with other peers, which means grouping together the transactions before to broadcast them to the network. A similar mechanism is already implemented in some Bitcoin wallets like Wasabi in the form of “coinjoin”, but the goal in Mintlayer is to incentivize users in adopting this procedure for every single transaction they do, not only when they want to “mix” their inputs and outputs to increase their anonymity. One incentive Mintlayer introduces is clear: thanks to signature aggregation, the batching cuts off most of the bytes of the transaction, so fees paid when batching transactions will be minimal. The second incentive is the ease of use: if batching payments is as simple as doing a standard payment, everybody will opt for batching just because they can only benefit from it: fees are lower while they are mixing their coins increasing anonymity. But for this to be successful, it needs the best possible UX/UI, especially on mobile. So yes, UX/UI is crucial in Mintlayer mission, that is why the team will work hard on that.

The other feature is the way DEX transactions work. In Mintlayer, the standard DEX is just an atomic swap. In UTXO models like Bitcoin and similar currencies (i.e. Litecoin), atomic swap has already been developed and is working. But for effective functioning and adoption, it’s not enough, three characteristics are missing. First, the ecosystem: if you can swap bitcoin only for litecoin, you are not so incentivized in using the atomic swap, nor developers will build on such technology. Second, the communication system, which is compelling in bridging users that are willing to swap their coins, otherwise they will never find an available peer for the exchange transaction. Luckily, there are examples of communication systems that have already been thought and developed (think of 0x protocol for Ethereum DEXs), and they just need to be integrated with the atomic swap. The third and crucial missing piece of the puzzle is UX/UI: users won’t use such a DEX if they can’t understand how to do it easily. Basically, most of the tech behind Mintlayer DEX is already working elsewhere, what Mintlayer does is picking up the best ideas for an incredible combo, adorned with a user friendly interface.

5) Korea is an extremely exciting market for us. For the last few decades, the Republic of Korea has proven itself to be a hotbed for technological innovations, as Koreans are on average much quicker to embrace new technologies and become early adopters. Even more recently, digital currencies and blockchain technology have been taking the nation by storm, especially amongst the younger generations, who are already very accustomed with digital microtransactions as a part of their daily life, something which is not as prevalent in the west yet. With all this in mind, we view Mintlayer adoption in East Asia in general, and Korea in particular, as critical to our success. We are proud to have partnered with Minted Lab and to be working with them on creating a Korean community, we hope to continue this collaboration for a long time, and in particular for it to eventually result in a vibrant ecosystem of decentralised projects as well as traditional financial institutions building on top of Mintlayer from Korea.

Most of the value in the crypto world is held in Bitcoin. Bitcoin is the default currency for crypto users and we believe it will also increasingly take the place of fiat money (if you haven’t read it yet, Saifedean Ammous’ book “The Bitcoin Standard” is a must). No DEX can be successful in the long run if you first need to exchange your money into another medium of exchange. The fact that today you still can't use your bitcoins to trade in a DEX is just unbelievable. Mintlayer will solve this.

The CEO and founder of RBB Lab, the company developing Mintlayer, is based in San Marino and has close ties to the government there, including the San Marino Innovation institute which is the regulatory agency of San Marino that has licensed RBB as a regulated blockchain entity. We believe that microstates like San Marino and Liechtenstein (another European microstate, where we are banking and also have good contacts and a presence) have the potential to lead the world in establishing good, effective and reasonable legislation for the blockchain industry, and that they offer the best environment for a project like ours to succeed. We consider San Marino Innovation institute to be a key partner, and that the mutual support that Mintlayer and the Republic of San Marino will give each other will be very beneficial both for the project and the country, resulting in a thriving blockchain ecosystem to flourish in this country, under our leadership and guidance.

A4.

1) Mintlayer is built with the UTXO model precisely because it grants interoperability with Bitcoin and because it allows to inherit technologies already developed for Bitcoin.

First, it grants more anonymity than an account-based model. Second, it allows to batch/mix/coinjoin transactions, which not only further increase privacy, but also drastically reduce the size and weight of payments. This allows to save fees and preserve the blockchain (lighter blocks means faster sync and low system requirements).

Third, an UTXO model allows the integration of Lightning Network, which we believe is the only way blockchain can really scale. We don’t believe that "sharding" (the Ethereum 2.0 model) is a viable option for scaling in the very long run without introducing elements of centralisation.

2) Any MLS-01 token will be possible to use for fees on the Mintlayer blockchain, not just MLT; it will be up to the free market to decide which tokens offer the best deal on fees on the Mintlayer blockchain, as block signers will choose which token they accept the fees in. However, only MLT tokens can be staked in order to become a participant and therefore be eligible to be a block signer. Additionally, MLT tokens can be used by participants to engage with the consensus mechanism to express their opinion regarding the development of the protocol.

Looking at Ethereum, it is mostly used for DEX transactions, which pay crazy fees. Just a niche of users can afford to pay such high fees, while the smaller transactions can’t even be made. The second use of Ethereum in terms of value transferred and gas spent was Tether until 2020 (Glassnode analysis made in 2020 is very illustrative in this sense https://insights.glassnode.com/ethereum-fees/). Actually, Tether is moving to Tron and is experimenting with other solutions, also on top of Bitcoin (RGB for example), in the desperate search for a blockchain that won’t get immediately congested, with skyrocketing fees. If Tether moves so quickly from a blockchain to another, why shouldn’t other projects do that? Especially considering that they can do it easily with the porting tool Mintlayer is developing to switch ERC20 tokens to the Mintlayer tokenization standard MLS-01. Scalability, no congestion, anonymity and the possibility to attract funds from Bitcoin holders should incentivize all token issuers to move to Mintlayer. Finally, Mintlayer could also be attractive for speculative reasons, for traders looking at arbitrage opportunities: look at the “market incentives” part of this article introducing Mintlayer DEX: https://www.mintlayer.org/news/2021-03-02-a-new-dex-concept-for-the-future-of-finance/

Q6.

I have seen a lot of Ethereum sidechains, but the Bitcoin sidechains are unfamiliar. Why does Minlayer use Bitcoin, what are the advantages and benefits?

A6.

Some of the benefits compared to Ethereum are as follows:

Efficiency: Mintlayer allows batching/coinjoin transactions, even between different tokens. A batched payment weights about โ…“ of a traditional Ethereum transaction and grants more privacy against blockchain analysis.

Long term scalability: as being compatible with Bitcoin's smart-contract, it fully supports Lightning Network, while Ethereum's sharding has not been implemented yet.

Sustainability: a full node can be run on an average PC which is not dedicated, while Ethereum requires a dedicated 500gb SSD (and the space requirement increases of about 150gb/year), about 16gb RAM and a good CPU. Nowadays, to sync a new week of Ethereum blockchain life, a full node requires an entire day on the most powerful machines, which is unsustainable in the long run.

Reliability: a Mintlayer unpruned full node syncs as fast as a Bitcoin node (just slightly heavier when the blockchain is saturated), while an Ethereum archival node requires about 4 terabyte, increasing by 2 terabyte per year. To query for an intermediate balance state, a user must apply to an archival node, which is likely a third party. These “big scary” archival nodes might also disappear in the future: today, it takes weeks to sync an archival node from the genesis or to reconstruct it from a full node.

Q7.

If you look at the token matrix on the homepage, there is something confusing. Is the total supply 400 million? 600 million? 200 million is allocated as a steak reward, but isn't it right to supply 600 million including that part?

A7.

The total hard cap is 600 millions, but 400 millions are pre-mined and distributed to the network since the token generation event, which will happen immediately before the Initial Dex Offering. The other 200 millions are generating with new blocks in the course of the next 10 years. However, it is worth to say that most part of the pre-mined 400 millions is “locked” according to the vesting type described here: https://docs.mintlayer.org/whitepaper/6-token-and-public-sale#6-2-token-distribution

This plan is thought to favour a long-term commitment of the current team and  investors in the project. For example, team and advisors won’t have access to their tokens until 4 months have passed since the token generation event (TGE). Even then, only 5% of the tokens will be available to them in the first month, and this amount will only unlock progressively in the course of the next 20 months.

If you look at the Mintlayer white paper, you think it's a platform for dex. Then, do you have no intention of listing Mintlayer on CEX?

A10.

Of course Mintlayer token MLT will be listed on CEXs and we hope all tokens issued on Mintlayer will have enough success to be listed on every major CEX. Having tokens both listed on DEX and CEX will be very beneficial for the users, since traders and liquidity providers can move instantaneously funds between CEX and DEX (using Lightning Network) speculating over the price differences. This will increase the liquidity available in the DEX, providing at the same time arbitrage opportunities for traders and more competitivity(so better prices) on the DEX.
